We have recently proved the enormous potential of a deep ultraviolet laser based on cerium-doped laser crystals - a relatively new widely tunable solid state laser material that has been called the "Ti:Sapphire of the UV". We have a major grant to develop a completely new ultrafast laser platform based on cerium, capable of generating few-femtosecond pulses in the ultraviolet. A UV source of this kind will drive new applications in fields such as attosecond science, plasma physics, and ultrafast chemistry. The successful candidate will: Investigate, design and build the first ever continuous wave and femtosecond cerium UV lasers. Have experience in one or more areas of non-linear optics, ultrafast lasers, and numerical modelling. Have a creative and dynamic approach to research, and have a demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment. There will also be an opportunity to investigate the use of diamond Raman lasers for beam combining of high power laser sources. We are looking to demonstrate this concept as a promising method of combining the output of multiple kW-class laser. This project will take up to 25% of the time.
