Smart Networking Questions

Although there are many resources available around how to network effectively, many people are still reluctant to network because they don't know what questions to ask or how to handle the networking meeting. Fear no more, below is a list of potential questions you could ask during your meeting. Make sure to structure these questions around your own particular situation.

  1. Is my career objective realistic [insert your objective], clear and focussed?
  2. What are the main economic trends and how might they impact my chosen career?
  3. In the current climate what is the average salary range I could expect given my background and experience?
  4. Where am I best to focus my energies - small organisations or larger ones?
  5. How or where can I get further information about (insert industry/role type)?
  6. Are there any skills I should learn or special study I might pursue that may assist me realise my career goals?
  7. How did you get into this field?
  8. What do you like most about this industry/role?
  9. What is the usual career path for someone with my skills and background and/or what are the advancement opportunities for someone with my background?
  10. Are there particular companies that are leaders in this industry/area?
  11. What other industries might be interested in my skills and experience?
  12. What might be the best approach to interest an employer/manager in this organisation/industry?
  13. Can you think of anyone else I should talk with who could provide me with further information about...[insert your career goal]?

Potential Networking Questions About Career Change Options

In addition to the above questions if you are considering changing careers you might want to consider asking some of the question below.

  1. How did you get into this area or acquire your job?
  2. What does a typical day look like?
  3. What the main job responsibilities/KPIs (key performance indicators) associated with this type of work?
  4. Is there demand for people in this field at the moment and is it likely to increase/decrease in the future?
  5. How long does it usually take to progress from one level to another in this career?
  6. What are the basic prerequisites for jobs in this field?
  7. Are there any short courses (or other courses) I should consider that might increase my chances of breaking into this area?
  8. What type of training is provided to people entering this role/field/organisation?
  9. What is the typical salary range for this type of work?
  10. Do you know anybody else that might be worthwhile talking to, especially someone who has also made a career change?
