"What attracted you to this role?"

This is your opportunity to really sell yourself at interview. Why do interviewers ask this question? They want to know that you have done your homework, checked them out and have thought about whether or not you really do want to work for them. Hiring employees is an expensive business and interviewers want to be sure they've made the correct choice and that the person selected has thought about the job and really does want to work for them!

Again it's your opportunity to ego stroke. You'll need to begin your response by letting them know that from your research both the company and business issues they face are the kind that excite you and match up well with your skills, abilities and past experience. If you know that the culture and management ethos of the company is in line with your values, tell them so.

Don't begin by telling them that the money is good or that they're close to where you live etc as this is implying that you're attracted to this role only because it's convenient for you and not because of what value you can bring to the company. Yes convenience is important but it shouldn't be the only reason you were attracted to the role.

Finally even if you're not asked this question during your interview you shouldn't leave without letting the interviewer know why you want to work for them!

Related to this question is Tweeza's question -"All large law firms are the same, the biscuits may be different but the firms have similar culture, structures, marketing and people any differences are so slight. How do you answer the question "Why do you want to work here?". Again the response is the same as that outlined above. Though many organizations seem to be the same there are always subtle differences and it's up to you to find these differences. Skilled interviewers might try and stump you and say "all large law firms are the same why do you want to work for our particular firm?" Phrasing the question in this way is designed to stump you and assess if you've done your research. You should try and let them know what you uncovered during your research, perhaps a network colleague gave you some inside information, maybe the culture of the organization differs from other law firms, maybe they offer flexibility, study assistance, opportunities for growth etc etc. However you respond make sure you make the interviewer believe that you really do want to work for them.
