Rejected by an Employer?

by Catherine Twiss

Being rejected is never easy, but if you're looking to find a new job its inevitable that at some point your application will be rejected for whatever reason. It's hard not to take it personally especially if you've had your heart set on the job or have been trying to secure a job for a while. But if you let yourself take it personally it'll be harder for you to bounce back and keep the positive outlook that's essential when looking for work or changing jobs.

Remember:

  1. It's not you personally that's being rejected: it's your application - reframe the "I'm just not good enough" to "they didn't like my application on this occasion."
  2. To embrace rejection you'll need to understand why you've been rejected. The only way to do this is to ask for feedback in a constructive and non-threatening way eg "I understand in this instance my application hasn't been successful and I accept your decision; however it would be really helpful to me moving forward if you could give me feedback on my application".
  3. Depending on the outcome of 2 above - You'll need to evaluate your performance - what did you learn from the feedback received - will you need to modify your behaviour to be more successful next time around? Should you update or amend your resume to better reflect your talents and qualities?
  4. Read How to keep your job search on track to help you maintain momentum.
  5. Continue to have faith in yourself and your applications - this will help you bounce back more quickly. Build up your career resilience. Remember somebody somewhere will believe you're the ideal candidate but they'll never know unless you keep trying and put yourself out there!!
