Uni students don't care
Six out of 10 (59%) Australians believe students are entering university courses without really thinking through the potential job opportunities or salary expectations according to a survey of 2700 people conducted by Australia’s leading career building and networking site, Linkme.com.au.
Channels Development Manager of LinkMe Marcus Webb says: “With first round university entrance offers having recently been made, parents and students alike are in the midst of making important career decisions and want to know the facts about work in different fields.
"Aussies believe there are a number of problems with the current university structure, including not enough programs being put in place by universities and government organisations to ensure graduates find a job.
“When asked what field they would recommend to prospective students, most people (44.9%) ignored university based careers and answered ‘trades’ believing these would offer the best career.”
Furthermore 54.9% of people believe universities should cut down on the number of students accepted into the fields where there is not enough work.
Those who work in education have stronger criticisms of universities than other Australians with 7 out of 10 people (69%) saying universities don’t provide enough information for prospective students on the realities of working in various fields. A further 7 out of 10 (67%) believe there is a lack of effective programs in place for students to find jobs.
“Hands on experience allows for the best transition into the workforce but currently only 31% of Australian companies offer a graduate program which reiterates the lack of support for graduates in Australia”, Webb Concluded.
