Moonlighting - the new Aussie way of life
With dollar signs in their eyes 76% of Australians would like to do additional paid work on top of their primary job, according to a survey conducted by Australia’s leading career building and networking site www.Linkme.com.au
Whilst almost one in four (23%) Australians are already moonlighting, it seems an overwhelming majority would like to have the extra padding in their pocket.
In a survey of over 670 people, 57% said the greatest motivation to find additional work is because their primary employment does not pay enough. Other reasons for considering a second job include getting extra experience to open up more career choices (19%) and because they enjoy it (13%).
Campbell Sallabank, CEO Linkme.com.au said:
“The cost of living is becoming unaffordable for many Australians because of factors such as increased petrol prices, increased interest rates and an increased cost of renting a home. In the current climate people are looking for alternative options to boost their income.
“Australians are lifestyle people. They want to take part in social activities, go traveling, eat out and have a disposable income to do so. They (Australians) also have a well regarded reputation for being hard workers and so when push comes to shove they are willing to put in the extra hours if it means maintaining their lifestyle.
“What is alarming is that 25% of Australian workers are performing their second job under the Tax Man’s radar which suggests Australians are becoming more financially desperate than ever.”
