Aussies Happy to be Made Redundant if the Price is Right: Survey
With redundancies on the up, 44.3% of Australians say they would take a voluntary redundancy, according to a survey of 1,150 employees by LinkMe.com.au, Australia's leading career network. However, 21.6% say they would demand a 6-10 week cash payout rather than the 2 week payout that 30.5% of companies currently offer.
Mr Campbell Sallabank, CEO of LinkMe says, "Over 40 percent of the Australian workforce has been made redundant at least once in their career and for the great majority (70%) it was an extremely stressful experience, so it's interesting to note that respondents to our survey are quite happy to take a redundancy if the money is right."
"Being made redundant is never easy. Only 21.7% of Australian companies provide career transition support, such as assistance with up-skilling, retraining and finding a new position, even though 85% of the working population believe that it is the responsibility of their employer to provide this service."
"When weighing up a change in job or career, it's essential to think through the rationale behind your desire to change, because at the end of the day, money isn't what gets you out of bed; your purpose and sense of belonging are," says Mr Sallabank.
"If you adopt the right mindset, redundancy can be an opportunity for career advancement and development that otherwise would have been unlikely."
"60% of jobs are never advertised. The best way to maintain your energy, uncover the unadvertised jobs and get headhunted is to network. Each person you have contact with has the potential to help you land a new job, if you let them know you are looking and how to find you."
"Online career networking is a great ice breaker to build confidence, foster collaboration for your job search and lead to face-to-face opportunities."
