Dream jobs to stay that way for Aussies

An astonishing 86% of Australians are not working in their dream job. A further 50% are not even working in the industry needed to get there, according to a survey conducted by linkme.com.au, Australia’s leading career building and networking site.

Of the 1004 respondents, 65% say their ideal job requires formal qualifications, which may be one of the reasons holding employees back.

Mr Campbell Sallabank CEO of linkme.com.au says:

“It is certainly a worry for companies that most employees are discontent with their current job. It is interesting to note that they are not even in their preferred industry to gain the experience needed to achieve their dream position.

“One of the challenges companies face is to retain good staff. So much time and effort is put into developing an employee to fit the cultural and professional needs of the company. To find out staff are dissatisfied with their position and the industry presents huge retention issues.

“People’s concept of their dream job can change over time as their career progresses. What you may think is you’re ideal position does not always meet your expectations once you are in the chair coping with the day to day grind.

“Respondents have also indicated that they require formal qualifications for their ideal job. Many may not able to complete studies because of their current work commitments or financial situation. It is very difficult to take a backward step financially to fit in study when there are bills to be paid although this may put them in a much better position in years to come.”
