Cheapskate employers take advantage of workers' bank accounts

Over a third of employees are left short due to paying work expenses out of their own pockets, according to a survey of 1,792 employees by LinkMe.com.au, Australia's leading online career networking site.

Of employees that are forced to pay expenses on behalf of their employers only 9.6% have a company credit card, leaving the rest to find the funds, be it cash or card, and juggle their income to suit their companies' needs.

"Many employees are forced to resort to using their own credit cards to cover costs," says Campbell Sallabank of LinkMe.com.au. "Most of these employees probably wouldn't mind this, but a huge 43.4% are left waiting and chasing for reimbursement. This has an incredibly detrimental affect on an employee's morale."

Putting even more pressure on the morale of workers, respondents who use their own cards report being charged interest due to excessively late reconciliation by employers. A staggering 85.1% are not reimbursed for these interest charges.

"It is understandable that employees are upset that this occurs. They feel they are being taken advantage of, yet they cannot say 'no'," says Sallabank. "Being left out of cash at the end of the month is bad enough, but also effectively paying a fee for this should be seen as unacceptable for any business that has its employees' interests and morale at heart."
