Aussies Want Longer Work Days, Shorter Work Weeks
Australians prefer to work like dogs during the day in exchange for a longer weekend according to a survey of 1279 by Australia's leading career building and networking site, Linkme.com.au.
Over one in two workers wish they could work 10 hours a day, four days a week.
One flexi day per month would also be nice (95%) and if they can't get it from their current employer, 82% would happily leave their job if greater flexibility was offered elsewhere.
Campbell Sallabank, CEO, Linkme.com.au said:
"Work life balance has to be the phrase of the decade! Last week, the Australian Bureau of Statistics revealed people work an average of 42 hours per week. Another report by Sydney University lecturer Caroline West showed we spend more time working than socialising, sleeping or even exercising!
"The verdict is out – people want flexibility to they can do more with their lives than just work. Employers better start paying attention because this is what will give them an edge over their competitors when looking to attract staff.
For some people, money does talk and 70% of Australians say they would work more hours than they do if they were paid for it. The rest don't have their personal time up for sale.
Only 9% of people say they'd prefer to work from 10am – 3pm every day of the week, 39% of people are happy with the standard 8 hour days, five day weeks – but not with the unpaid overtime they currently put in.
