Aussies on the move in the New Year
28.7% of Australians say they have worked overseas at some stage in their lives and a further 43% say working overseas is on top of the New Year’s wish list according to research of 744 respondents instigated by Linkme.com.au, Australia’s leading career building and networking site.
Most Aussies roaming the globe work in administration roles, closely followed by jobs in the IT sector. It is well known that the best bartenders, nannies and tour guides come from down under, and there is a massive demand for Australian teachers.
More than one third of Aussies working overseas have worked in a different career to the one they were doing back home. Interestingly 65% of respondents believe the experience did not help their career once they returned home.
Campbell Sallabank, CEO of Linkme.com.au says:
“Overwhelmingly Australians say the best thing about working overseas is the cultural experience and meeting new people. The money was third on the list as was the flexibility.
“It is interesting to note many Australians that have worked overseas did not believe doing so assisted their career. The fact that one in three employees established a career in a different industry may be one of the reasons why there career was not boosted on their return home. Employers may not see the experience gained as career progression if it is not in the same industry.
"However the fact that over two thirds of Australians have worked overseas or intend to work overseas shows that the overseas career move is no longer a dream but just 'what you do'.”
