Aussie job hunters snubbed by employers
Almost all Australians have applied for a job throughout their career and not heard a word back from the employer. In a survey by Australia’s leading career building and networking site linkme.com.au 92% admitted to being snubbed even though they have taken the time and effort to put together an applicant letter and resume.
The lack of response by companies not only leaves job applicants disheartened but does not leave a good impression of the company with 79% of respondents agreeing that the company has an obligation to respond to all applicants as a common courtesy once the position has been filled.
Mr Campbell Sallabank CEO of linkme.com.au says:
“It is in the company’s best interest to respond to all applicants even if they are not successful. This gives an indication that their resume had been accepted and considered, it is not only the polite thing to do, but will make the applicant appreciate that the organisation was professional enough to respond.
Of the 500 survey respondents 49% admitted they applied for jobs even if they do not meet the criteria with 40% doing so for experience and a further 19% doing so because they were so desperate for a job. Even though they do not meet the criteria 24% were still surprised that they did not hear back from the employer.
“Looking for work can be very stressful. Not receiving responses from companies puts more strain on the job hunter and impacts on their confidence and morale.
“Responding to hundreds of applications can prove difficult. However by making the effort you are putting out a positive message about the organisation. It is important to protect your brand from negative comments that can generate an unprofessional image. You never know who you are ignoring!”
