Aussie employees ditch work parties for their own

Australian employees have lost the office Christmas cheer this year with 29% admitting they will not attend their employers Christmas party. 17% say they are too busy with their personal after hours activities to bother attending their work do, according to a survey by Linkme.com.au, Australia’s leading career building and networking site.

Of the 738 survey respondents 79% say their company will be having a Christmas party. However, 20.6% of employers are apparently not bothering because its simply too much time and effort to organise.

Mr Campbell Sallabank, CEO of linkme.com.au says:

“The silly season is such a busy period for many people. The statistics show that employees are starting to avoid their work Christmas parties as they have so many of their own to attend. Finalising work before you leave for holidays, Christmas shopping and catching up with friends can be very difficult to juggle in such a small and concentrated time period. Private activities will often be prioritized over social work engagements.

Interestingly 51% have said they don’t attend their work function because they do not want to spend more time than they have to with their colleagues.

“It is surprising that half of employees are not interested in enjoying the company of their colleagues in a relaxed environment to celebrate the year that has been. This is often seen as they best time to socialize with your colleagues and get to know them beyond their work persona.

“Although it is expected in many Australian workplaces for a Christmas party to be organised, the next obstacle for organizations will be to get their employees to attend.”
