41% of Aussies say colleagues are making them FAT
Aussies battling the bulge could have colleagues with sweet toothed tendencies to blame according to a recent study conducted by leading career building and networking site LinkMe.com.au.
The survey which polled over 2000 Australians revealed more than 40% of workers cannot resist the temptation to indulge when there are lollies, chocolate cake or biscuits offered and as a result 41% believe they have gained weight at their current job.
CEO of LinkMe, Campbell Sallabank says: “Colleagues have an interesting relationship because, by choice or otherwise, they tend to spend more time together than families and friends do. As a result it is understandable that there will be common habits, fads and interests throughout an office environment, but, it is habits like this Australian workplaces can do without.
Snacking is outlined as the biggest cause of weight gain. The majority of Aussies have a healthy lunch consisting of a sandwich/roll (64%) or a salad (24%), but it is the added chips, chocolates, fizzy drinks and fatty snacks in the office which are contributing to the obesity epidemic.
“Aside from personal wellbeing, it is important for productivity that Australia has a fit and healthy workforce. The rapid increase of obesity related illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease means workers are becoming restricted in the tasks which they can perform.
“Implementing healthy snack food choices at company canteens and in office vending machines could help prevent workers opting for a chocolate bar or alternative unhealthy snacks.”
